Do Collagen Supplements Work?
Collagen is a protein found in skin, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues in the human body. There are 28 different forms of collagen, with types I, II, and III accounting for 80–90 percent of total collagen in the human body. Types I and III are mostly found in your skin and bones, while type II is mostly in your joints.
Collagen is produced naturally by the body, but supplements have been created to improve skin elasticity, joint health, muscle building, fat burning, healthy skin, nails and hair and more.
Collagen Supplements Come in Several Forms
Liquid Biocell Collagen supplements are typically sourced from pigs, cows, or fish and may contain types I, II, or III collagen. Supplements are available in three main forms: hydrolyzed, raw, or as gelatin.
- Hydrolyzed collagen. This form, also known as collagen hydrolysate or collagen peptides, is broken down into smaller protein fragments called amino acids.
- Gelatin. The collagen in gelatin is only partially broken down into amino acids.
- Raw. In raw — or undenatured — forms, the collagen protein remains intact.
However, during digestion, all types of collagen are broken down into amino acids, which are then absorbed and used to produce collagen or other proteins that your body requires.
In fact, your body produces collagen naturally utilizing amino acids from whatever proteins you eat, so you don’t necessarily need to take collagen supplements. However Liquid Biocell Collagen Supplements provide higher concentrations or collagen for the body as well as increased absorbability. Also Liquid Biocell Collagen is absorbed from within the body instead of through the skin resulting in increased absorption.
Supplements may work for skin and joints
There have been a few scientific studies on Collagens benefits for skin wrinkles, joints, and skin youthfulness. Evidence indicates that some collagen supplements do reduce wrinkles and alleviate joint pain.
Skin
Collagen types I and III are major components of your skin, providing strength and structure (11). Despite the fact that your body creates collagen naturally, research shows that the amount of collagen in your skin may decline by 1% per year, contributing to aging skin (12). For this reason it can be beneficial to take Collagen supplements to ensure the body has enough Collagen to restore youthful skin and protect from aging.
Early research shows that taking supplements may boost collagen levels in your skin, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity and hydration (13, 14, 15, 16). In a study in 114 middle-aged women, taking 2.5 grams of hydrolyzed collagen type I — daily for 8 weeks reduced wrinkle volume by 20% (17).
In another study in 72 women ages 35 years or older, taking 2.5 grams of hydrolyzed collagen types I and II — daily for 12 weeks reduced wrinkle depth by 27% and increased skin hydration by 28% (18).
Joints
Collage type II is predominately found in cartilage (4). When the cartilage between joints wears away it may lead to inflammation, stiffness, pain, and reduced function, especially in the hands, knees, and hips (19). A handful of studies suggest that various types of collagen supplements may help relieve joint pain.
In two studies, 40 mg of UC-II — a brand of raw type-II collagen — taken daily for up to 6 months reduced joint pain and stiffness in individuals with OA (20, 21).
In another study, taking 2 grams of BioCell — a brand of hydrolyzed type-II collagen — daily for 10 weeks reduced scores of joint pain, stiffness, and disability by 38% in individuals with (22).
Bone health
Collagen, particularly type I collagen, makes up the majority of bone (26). As a result, collagen supplements are said to aid in the prevention of osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak, brittle, and prone to fracture (27).
In one human trial, 131 postmenopausal women who took 5 grams of a hydrolyzed collagen supplement every day for a year saw a 3% rise in spine bone density and a nearly 7% increase in femur bone density (30).
Nonetheless, while some research suggests that collagen supplements may help to increase bone mass and prevent bone loss, further human trials are needed.
Building muscle
Collagen supplements, like all protein sources, are likely to aid muscle building when used in conjunction with resistance training (31).
After 3 months of resistance training, 53 older men who took 15 grams of hydrolyzed collagen grew considerably more muscle than those who received a non-protein placebo (32).
Collagen supplements demonstrated similar results when compared to a non-protein post-workout supplement in another trial of 77 premenopausal women (33).
In essence, these findings show that collagen supplements may be more effective than taking no protein at all after a workout.
Dosages and Side Effects
Based on the research, the following dosages are suggested:
For wrinkles on the skin.
After 8 to 12 weeks, 2.5 grams of hydrolyzed collagen type I and a mixture of types I and II showed advantages (17, 18).
To help with joint pain.
40 milligrams of raw type-II collagen or 2 grams of hydrolyzed type-II collagen given daily for 6 months or 10 weeks may help lessen joint pain (20, 21, 22).
For the sake of bone health.
Although research is limited, a single study found that 5 grams of hydrolyzed collagen derived from cows helped enhance bone density after a year (30).
For the purpose of muscular development.
Although alternative protein sources are likely to have similar effects, 15 grams consumed within 1 hour after resistance training may assist develop muscle (32, 33).
Collagen supplements are typically considered safe by the majority of people.
However, moderate side effects such as nausea, upset stomach, and diarrhea have been noted (38).
